My Personal Experience
On November 30th, 2015, I injured my back at work. You see, I’ve been working in the vending industry for 35 years. What happened is, my helper and I, were moving a vending machine through a door, and when the machine started to tip, I took the full load on my back as I stopped it form falling into the door frame. I herniated the disc, between L4 & L5, in my back. Initially, I went to my personal Doctor, after an X-ray was taken, and nothing was found, he referred me to Physical Therapy. As a result, the pain only got worse. When I told him this he said; “you have to go through workman’s comp, because this is a work related injury”.
Entered the Workers Compensation Program
The injury didn’t really start to become unbearably painful until the following day. That is to say, the reason I initially went to my personal Doctor, was because I hadn’t reported this to my employer at the time the injury occurred. When I explained this to my employer, they were understanding, and I was given permission to go through workmen’s compensation. Of course, the first thing they did was take another X-ray. My next visit the Doctor told me “we don’t see anything”, but I insisted as my pain level was at eight or even nine. At this point, I was given a MRI, which revealed a herniated disk between L4 & L5, of thirteen or fourteen millimeters. Consequently, I was restricted to limited duty at work, and given Acupuncture treatments. Meanwhile, the pain persisted at the same excruciating levels.
Referred from Chiropractor to Surgeon
For the simple reason that the Acupuncture had very little effect, I started getting treatment from the in house chiropractor. Incidentally, at this point, I’ve been living, and working, with this unbelievable level of pain for over a year. Since the chiropractor treatments had very little or no positive results, I was sent to the surgeon. For fear that, I might have to live like this for the rest of my life, I agreed to see the specialist. Finally, I saw the surgeon, and he took one look at the MRI and said; “you need surgery”. I had a feeling this would be the prognosis, so I asked if there might be an alternative. At this point, I entered their Physical therapy system, where I seemed to make some progress. By this time, the pain had started to subside. So, I became hopeful, I might not need surgery.
Retired from the Vending Industry
Over the years, since the injury occurred, the pain gradually reduced to a level of three or four. As of January first of two thousand twenty, I am officially retired from the vending industry. This is to say, I no longer have to do the physical labor required for this job. However, every day I experience pain, especially when I take my dogs for a walk.
Personal Testimony
